Exhibition of Proposals of 7 Architectural Ideas Competitions for the New Metro Line 4 Stations
Zappeion, Athens, Greece
Line 4 of the Athens Metro is one of the country’s largest projects currently in progress. Its completion directly affects both the functioning of the city of Athens as well as the lives of its citizens. The under-construction section A' of Line 4 is approximately 13km long, includes 15 underground stations and is expected to serve at least 340,000 passengers per day for the year 2029.
Redefining the transport mode of the citizens by reforming, expanding and modernising the mass transit system aims to attract as many passengers as possible who currently move to and from the center by other means. The reduction of car traffic, which will in the long-term lead to the prevention of traffic congestion in the wider area, aims to shorten total travel time, better distribute traffic loads, reduce air pollution, upgrade the acoustic environment, and ultimately result in improved life conditions for the citizens, providing safe and delay-free transportation.
Athens Anaplasis S.A. in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport, the Municipality of Athens and Elliniko Metro S.A. announced in May 2023 open architectural design contests for seven out of fifteen stations of the aforementioned section which are located within the boundaries of the Municipality of Athens, namely, Akadimia, Alexandras, Dikastiria, Exarcheia, Evangelismos, Kolonaki, and Kypseli stations.
According to the organisers, “The purpose of these 7 competitions was the selection of modern architectural proposals that will ensure functionality, aesthetic quality, and constructional perfection for the open space of the stations as well as the wider surrounding area. Based on the requirements of contemporary art and science, as well as the principles of bioclimatic design the aim is to produce a high-quality, pleasant, safe, and accessible public space for all”. The exhibition displayed the proposals that were submitted by 43 teams with more than 670 architects, engineers, scientists and students, who participated in the competition process.
