Architectural Ideas Competition for the Athens Archaeological Museum: Exhibition of Proposals

Cultural Centre “Melina”, Athens, Greece

The exhibition, hosted at the City of Athens Cultural Centre “Melina”, presented the totality of the proposals of the Architectural Ideas Competition for the Construction of the Athens Archaeological Museum. The New Archaeological Museum of the City of Athens will satisfy a timeless need, as Athens remains perhaps the only capital that does not have its own museum. The study and exhibition of the archaeological wealth that has been found in the Athenian city is of primary importance for the comprehensive presentation of ancient Greek history and art. The above gap is not covered by the existing museums of Athens, as the National Archaeological Museum is not an Athenian Museum, while the Museum of the City of Athens includes collections from more recent centuries.

The aim of the New Archaeological Museum of the City of Athens, through its exhibitions, is to emphasize the values of politics and sciences that flourished in Athens, to highlight the private and public life of the citizens who created the Acropolis and the Parthenon and at the same time to constitute a living organization and an international hub for the development of scientific, artistic and, more broadly, cultural activities.

For the realization of this museum in July 2022, an Open Ideas Competition was announced by Athens Anaplassis SA in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the City of Athens. The main evaluation criteria of the proposals were the Architectural Approach, the Program and Functional Requirements, the Technical Approach, the Public Outdoor Space and the Placement of Functions, always within the framework of Bioclimatic Planning and Sustainable Development. The jury consisted of Messrs. Tournikiotis Panagiotis (Architect, Professor NTUA, Chairman of the Committee), Papanikolaou Morpho (Architect), Kougianou Penelope (Architect), Marda Nelli (Architect, Professor Emeritus NTUA) and Glentis Alexandros (Civil Engineer, Representative of the Organizing Authority).

17 proposals were submitted, of which 16 were found to be valid. 3 prizes and 2 commendations were awarded.
