Antiparos House
Antiparos, Greece (forthcoming)
This residence is conceived as a quiet extension of the Antiparos landscape, embedded gently within the island’s rocky terrain and shaped by its natural contours. Rather than imposing itself on the site, the architecture follows the existing topography, allowing the building to emerge organically from the land. The low, horizontal volumes echo traditional Cycladic forms while maintaining a contemporary language that respects the scale and character of the surrounding environment.
Locally sourced stone forms the primary building material, selected for its durability, thermal performance, and visual continuity with the island’s geological identity. The stone masonry is assembled using traditional techniques practiced by local craftsmen, ensuring both authenticity and longevity. This approach not only preserves regional construction knowledge but also reinforces a strong connection between the building and its cultural context. Complementary materials, such as natural timber, lime-based renders, and shaded metal structures, are chosen for their resilience to the Mediterranean climate and their understated aesthetic.
The design philosophy prioritizes harmony between architecture, landscape, and climate. Outdoor living spaces, shaded terraces, and transitional zones blur the boundary between interior and exterior, encouraging continuous engagement with the surrounding scenery. Openings are carefully oriented to frame views of the hills and sea while optimizing natural light and ventilation. Deep overhangs and pergolas provide passive shading, reducing energy demand and enhancing comfort throughout the year.
Construction methods emphasize minimal intervention and environmental responsibility. Existing vegetation and rock formations are preserved wherever possible, and the building footprint is adapted to the terrain to limit excavation. By employing local construction crews and regional materials, the project supports the island’s economy while reducing its environmental footprint. Ultimately, the residence represents a contemporary interpretation of vernacular architecture—rooted in place, shaped by tradition, and designed for enduring coexistence with the natural landscape of Antiparos.
